3.1 Getting Started

3.1.1 Introduction

We have to do several things that require one to know some basic computer skills to get started.
As you get going, things get easier.  We have to accomplish the following tasks:

    • Connect the hardware and turn it on.
    • Start the system

If you don't have any computer experience, it will save some frustration if you have either a dealer
or a knowledgeable person help you for a few minutes.

If you are on your own, don't give up, just be patient.

3.2 Connecting the Hardware

Your computer system typically consists of the following equipment parts:

    • WBT (Web Terminal)
    • Keyboard
    • Mouse
    • Monitor
    • Router (optional)
    • Hub (optional)
    • Pinter
    • Barcode Reader

This section will discuss how the hardware is connected, and the network connection will be deferred
     to the next section, 3.3.

3.2.1 WBT (Web Terminal)

The WBT is a small computer box to which all other peripherals, such as the mouse, keyboard
and printer are connected.  All configuration settings should have been set up by BizPie's technician
    prior to shipping.

There is a power switch on the front of the WBT.  Turn it to the off (no lighting on the button) position.
Plug in the power cord into the back of the WBT (it's the connector with the three large recessed prongs)
then plug the other end of the power cord into the wall.

3.2.2 Keyboard

Plug the keyboard into the connector on the back of the WBT.

The connector is designed so that it will only push on one way and there is only one connector that it
fits.  It does not take a lot of force to connect the keyboard.  If it does not want to plug in, rotate the
connector on the wire until the tab lines up with the mating notch on the socket of the WBT.   The keyboard
     should now plug in easily.

3.2.3 Mouse

The mouse is another device to let user to interface with the computer.   However, the current version of
BizPie does not use the mouse to make selections.   It's used in administering the configurations and
    connections to the main server.

3.2.4 Monitor

The monitor is what looks like a small TV set.   The monitor has two cables coming out the back.
The power cord should be plugged into the outlet in the rear of the WBT.

Connect the other wire to the mating plug on the back of the WBT.   It should be the only connector
that it will fit.   The connector fits only one way so rotate it 180 degrees if it does not fit.   Notice the
shape of the mating parts of the connector.

You can easily see which way they fit.  Plug in the connector to the WBT and tighten the connector
by turning the two screws on the connector.  Things should fit easily.  If you have to use excessive force,
check on what you are doing.

3.2.5 Printer

Connect the printer to the WBT in the same way that you connected the monitor.  There are two
cables.  Plug in the power cable.  It may be loose at both ends so plug it into the printer and then into
the outlet on the back of the WBT.  If there is no free outlet for the printer, plug it into the wall.

Next connect the data cable (the other wire.) One end will connect to the back of the printer and be
attached with two screws like the monitor or with two clips.  Finally connect the printer to the back
of the WBT.  It should only fit on one connector and it will be usually located above or below the
monitor connector.  This connector will also have two screws and these should be tightened.

3.2.6 Barcode Reader

If you have an optional bar code reader, you can install it by first making sure that you exit BizPie
program, and then power off the WBT.

You can now unplug the keyboard and plug the bar code reader cable in its place.  Plug the keyboard
into the back of the barcode reader.

Please be careful!  Both plugs can only go in one way.   Now you may turn on the WBT, and resume
    normal operation.

The base of the bar code reader is a small box with a cable coming out of it.  There are two connectors,
one for the wand and one for the keyboard.  Next, plug in the keyboard to the base of the bar code
reader.  Finally, plug in the bar code reader wand into the side of the bar code reader base.

Hold the barcode wand like a pencil.  Scan the barcode label as if you were drawing a line through the
barcode label.  Begin the scan about 1/4" before the first bar, and follow it through to about 1/4" beyond
    the last bar.

Pressing harder on the barcode label will not make it read any better!

3.3 Connecting the Network

  • The most confusing part of the setup involves the network connections.  This section describes a
simplified connection procedure.  For more details on the network connections, please refer to the
    router and hub manufacturer's manuals
  • The components of the network is
    • Router
    • Hub
    • Modem (DSL)
    • Cross-over Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors
    • Straight Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors

3.3.1 Network Connection – single station

If you have two or more stations, you need a router for the internet connection.  Please refer to the next
    section, 3.3.2 for proper connections.

If you have a single station, you connect directly the DSL modem to WBT using a Ethernet cable.  There
are two types of the Ethernet cables: straight or cross-over.  Which type to use depends on the type
of the modem.  Typically, the cross-over cable would work.

3.3.2 Network Connection – multiple stations

If you have two or more stations, you should have a router.  A router provides means for many stations
in the store to access internet.  A hub allows multiple stations to be connected to the line.  Some router
    has a built-in hub.

Connect the power transformers of the router and hub to the power source.  Make sure that you use
the power transformer that came with the devices.  Using wrong power transformer will damage the
router or hub.  Make sure the power lights on the devices are "on".

Connect the cross-over cable from the back of the modem to the back of the router marked "WAN".
Notice that Now connect the router port marked "LAN" to the hub marked "uplink" using a cross-over
cable.  Make sure that link  light is "on" on both the modem and the router.  If the link light is not on,
check the connections.  If the problem persists, try using a straight Ethernet cable.

Now connect from the "LAN" port of the router to the "uplink" port of the hub.  Again, make sure link
or active light  of the hub and the router are on.  Some hub comes with a switch for the uplink to allow users
to use either cross-over of straight Ethernet cable.

Next, connect the hub to the WBT using straight Ethernet cables.  Check to see that active lights are lit on both
hub and the WBT.  The power connector to the hub sometimes becomes loose.  Make sure that all lights on the
     hub are on.

Now you are ready to turn on the WBT to make connections to the BizPie Server.

3.4 Startup Menu

Figure 3.1 Startup Menu

Once your connection to the BizPie Server, the first screen you'll see is as shown in Figure 3.1.  The
screen identifies the store name and the maximum number of stations assigned for the store.  It also
prompts you to enter your station number.

Upon entering the station number, you are now ready to use the BizPie POS software.

3.5.1 Selecting from the Main Menu

To select the section of the BizPie to run, type in the appropriate number and press the "Enter" key.
You can also press one of the function keys (F1 through F10) that correspond to the number you want
to select.  Throughout BizPie, you can make menu selections either by typing in the appropriate menu
choice number and pressing "Enter", or just by pressing the function key that matches that number.

You will immediately see the selected menu option screen displayed.

Now you may proceed to use the section.

Pressing the "Esc" (Escape) key will always return you to the previously used section from anywhere in
    the system.

If you press the "Esc" key at the Main Menu, the system displays a special screen with "BizPie" on it as
    shown in Figure 3.3.

The system at this point goes into "Standby Mode".  This means that if there are any problems external
to the program, such as power interruption, customers playing with the computer if you left it unattended,
etc., none of the files will be damaged.

Pressing F1 key will disconnect the BizPie from the server.  You have to reconnect to the  BizPie server
to continue.  Pressing any other key from this screen will display the normal Main Menu and you will be
    back in normal operation.
